Steve’s note: Jim was a veteran photographer at The Oklahoman and ended his career as photo editor. He was, and is, an excellent photographer with very, very high standards. Look at this book today and it’s an amazing snapshot at Oklahoma City pre-MAPS. The city truly was dying.
Review:Oklahoma City Art Museum in collaboration with Portfolio Editions, $30. (51 duotone photographs and two illustrations) This is an attempt at blending wonderful historic photographs of early-day Oklahoma City with contemporary scenes, many from the same locations.
Somehow, the historic photographs, usually by unknown photographers, are more appealing than the modern attempt. The title may fool the reader. I could only find one picture out of the 51 made outside of Oklahoma City; it was an 1889 picture made in Guthrie.
Combining historical and “art” photography doesn’t always work.
